Creativity Tip: Drive Innovation with a Common Language: Strengthen Your Innovation Instinct
Innovation is a people process. I coined the term, Innovation Instinct, to create a simple way for people to talk about innovation as a key competency. There isn't a successful business today that isn't searching for employees with a highly developed Innovation Instinct. Most companies are focusing intensely on developing this key skill set.
Everyone knows people with the Innovation Instinct; they recognize valuable ideas; they shape and tailor them to make them receivable; they get them implemented. They know their strengths with the creative process and draw on the strengths of others when needed.
One of the most important lessons I've learned over the years is the power of a common language to help clarify what's needed. Imagine how much easier it would be to drive innovation if we adopted the term, "Innovation Instinct." I can hear groups saying, and everyone would instantly understand the meaning:
"We need to shore up our Innovation Instinct on this new project."
"We need to tap our Innovation Instinct right now."
"Howard's Innovation Instinct has developed into a finely oiled machine."
"Our Innovation Instinct on this project was just super."
Once you understand the term, it makes communicating expectations so much easier.
So, let's get busy and work on strengthening your "Innovation Instinct: The Ability to Generate, Build, and Implement Valuable Ideas." It's a 21st Century survival skill in the workforce no matter your job.
LIFT Your Thinking ... until next time.
